File names, types, and extensions
When referring to file names and file types, use these guidelines:
- Write file names in lowercase: setup.exe, image.jpg. In instructions, distinguish file names from the surrounding text as you would button names—we recommend boldface.
- Write file types in all capital letters: GIF, JPEG, DOC.
- Write file name extensions (generally three letters separated from the file name by a period) using lowercase letters: gif. Don’t include the period that separates the file name from the extension. Enclose the extension in quotation marks—because if you’re referring to an extension, it’s the same as referring to a word as a word (see “Referring to words and letters” under “Quotation Marks”).
Examples
Right-click on setup.exe and choose Run as.
You can upload GIF and JPEG files.
A JPEG file usually has a file name extension like “jpg” or “jpe”; for example, photo123.jpg.
The data is exported to a CSV (comma-separated values) file.
